Good Things about this Art Fair:
Gasparilla offers a superb new and emerging artist program and I was selected as 1 of 10 new artists (apparently, over 200 applied for these 10 slots) to take part in the show.
There is also a cash award that all 10 artists are considered for (this year was $1500) that goes to the winner as selected by the judge (I won that accolade this year). A $250 check is given to help with expenses, no jury fee is required when applying and no booth fee either. No wonder there are hundreds applying to this program.
The events committee must be commended for the smooth running of the show. Breakfast and a hot lunch were on offer each day, there was an artists get together at the end of the the first day (award winners were announced at this time and prizes handed out), all nominees were also invited in the evening to the Tampa Museum of Art, to a function that had all the nominees/winners art on display, a great chance to talk to other artists and patrons of the museum about the art.
As new and emerging artists, our get-in and get-out were made easier by being offered first in first out of the show.
A great show with great support for new and emerging artists. Being an award winner, I am invited to take part next year and vie with all the other artists and take my place fully emerged into the art fair scene.
Bad Things about this Art Fair:
This year, the weather: Saturday was a wash out with torrential rain most of the day. Of course, this was beyond the control of the events committee.
Booths that were on the grassy areas suffered on Sunday, as they turned into mud baths and potential customers were not venturing down these isles. This impacted on sales.
Advice to Other Artists Considering this Show:
If you apply to this program via Zapplication, a booth shot is not required, just 3 pics of your art. If you are selected to take part, remember, you've already won: being 1 of 10 is a fantastic achievement.
