Good Things about this Art Fair:
This is a first year one day show that popped up in Duluth this summer, it's run by artists, for artists, meaning their main goal is creating sales. About 20 artists did the show, but I imagine this number will grow with time.
The setting is along Lake Superior in a popular city park. Booths were very spacious and for a first year show I felt it was pretty well attended and imagine this will only get better in years to come...assuming good weather like this year.
For a first year show the promoters really did a good job advertising and getting the word out there. It seemed that every 1/4 mile along London Road (the main thoroughfare between downtown Duluth and the popular north shore) there was a sign advertising the show. Some ads were also placed and they received some media coverage. It seemed that most people that came spent at least a little money and a few serious art buyers attended as well. Everyone is in a good mood here...it's hard not to be in this setting!
Bad Things about this Art Fair:
Because it's set right along the lake there's always a potential for treacherous winds and cold weather...even in August. It's rarely hot along the big lake. Weather can change quickly so bring stakes and/or weights and expect anything!
Next year they may change the date of the show, depending on what other shows in the area decide to do and availability of the park. I hope they keep the same weekend or at least don't go any later than Labor Day weekend, as that's the last weekend that the tourists are in full force.
Advice to Other Artists Considering this Show:
My sales were quite good, but my work is highly regional and desired by tourists in this area. If you have Lake Superior or north woods themed work and don't have to travel far, then this is a low investment, low risk, low stress show to do. Everyone that attended this year seemed either satisfied or surprised by the amount of sales they made. Perfect weather played no small part in this!
