Good Things about this Art Fair:
The Festival's director, board and volunteers put the artists FIRST. This is the reputation of the show, and it's true. This positive attitude and interest in the artists extends to the public who arrive at 9:00 sharp to look and buy at this one- day show. Customers come from Cedar Rapids and beyond and many are yearly regulars who welcomed BlackTree Studio Pottery, as this was our first year.
This being a one day show potential customers decided on what they liked and bought what they liked more quickly than, in my experience, at 2and 3 day shows. In the show's application process there was an emphasis that the artist offer some work at a "reasonable" price -- in my case I made sure we had $30 stoneware cups and hand built ramekins -- but my average price point sale was well above that.
The artists' reception, hosted by Campbell Steele Gallery in Marion, was lovely, generous -- good food and drink -- social, and the gallery's art work throughout the two floor space was a treat to experience in itself.
With only 50 artists, every booth location is good. And by the way, there were 23 brand new artists and 27 "returning favorites". Setup and take down is very, very easy.
Area hotels are cheap and clean.
Bad Things about this Art Fair:
There really are no bad things about the show. It is what the say it is-- one day, 50 artists, no beer or music, just good works.
Advice to Other Artists Considering this Show:
We applied two years in a row before getting into the show this year. The difference this year may have been that we meticulously answered the questions about the price range of our work, and, as requested, included a photographic example of a lower priced work which would be in our booth. The Marion Art Festival seem to be very serious when reviewing your answers.
