Good Things about this Art Fair:
This art festival is always attended by an informed, engaged, and diverse crowd, who appreciate the artists and art. If I wrote nothing else, this is the most outstanding quality about 57th. We've had "collectors" return every year. There's a wonderful group of volunteers, and a consistency in the fair's organization and management. I'd certainly rank this show up with the best art fairs in the country. And, the tree-lined streets surrounding the University of Chicago neighborhood make for a beautiful setting.
This year 57th donated booths for first-time participating emerging artists. I love this effort by the art fair to bring young artists into this experience. The art fair circuit needs energetic, innovative young artists, and waiving their fees and providing booths is a great way to imitate these emerging artists.
Bad Things about this Art Fair:
The early morning setup might be problematic for some. Also, there's no designated parking for vendors, but we've yet to have any problem leaving our small trailor overnight on the street.
June weather in Chicago can be problematic -- sometimes cold, rain is likely -- but this year the weather was great and so was attendance coinciding with Univ. of Chicago alum weekend.
Advice to Other Artists Considering this Show:
Applying to 57th Street may be frustrating as artists who are accepted are permitted to stay in the show, on their medium, for 3 years. Keep trying -- it's worth it.
You'll be busy, so pack a lunch (especially if you're solo). You won't be able to stroll around the fair very much for amenities.
